“Serious Games” helping people to learn – like Texas Holdem Investing

by MaskedFinancier on April 3, 2009

The Irish Times reported today about how “Serious games make learning fun” and described the efforts of an Irish company called Silvertongue Software (great name!) in this field.

The mission of Silvertongue is to use gaming software and role playing games (RPGs) to provide an interactive learning environment. One of their first projects is a Sims-like game to teach health and safety rules to young adults.

The idea is to help make what are “dull guidelines” more exciting. Apparently workplaces have started to overcome an aversion to allowing games near the office – among Silvertongue’s clients are Shell and Coca Cola.

A major UK company in the education space – Gatlin International – also referred to Silvertongue’s developments in this space.

Texas Holdem Investing is acting in this space too. It is a way of helping people to learn about investing in an environment that is not dull (investing is not dull but many people think it is before trying) and which lots of people can relate to.
I think that financial firms, particularly those with trading operations, should force all of their employees to learn poker as a way of learning how to evaluate risk over the long term and how to manage downside risk. In actual fact, some firms do this already – like Susquehanna – which has used poker as a recruiting tool.

Perhaps another avenue to explore for Texas Holdem Investing?
